Loved this experience. I hate going to doctors especially around sexual health. The fact that everything can be done without having an in person or video/phone call is AWESOME!

I was happily surprised to see that this service exists in Canada. It was very simple to use, shipping was fast, and you have a chance to connect with a health care provider if you have any questions. Love the service!

Birth Control FAQs

Why get birth control through Gemma?

Even though most people might be used to getting birth control through their family doctor, there's now a better way. Gemma offers a way for you to get birth control prescribed online and delivered to your door, along with extensive support and free shipping. Getting birth control with Gemma has a ton of benefits, including:

Convenience. When you use Gemma, you can request a prescription whenever you want or need it, saving you any scheduling problems or time-consuming trips to the doctor’s office. And getting your prescription delivered to your door means avoiding a trip to the pharmacy every month.

Ongoing support. When visiting a doctor, you usually only have a few minutes to get all of your questions answered. The medical team here at Gemma can answer all the questions you have, whenever you have them.

Choice. We have access to a wide range of birth control options, and we encourage you to speak up and tell us what you would prefer. Our medical team is there to help you, not to impose anything on you.

Transparency. We'll show you your total before you check out (and it'll probably be free) — meaning no more questions or sticker shock when it’s time to pay at the pharmacy.

How does Gemma work?

It’s simple! You create a Gemma account, complete your online questionnaire and tell us what type of birth control you are looking for (we'll help you choose if you're not sure). You will also have the chance to choose your refill schedule and shipping location during each visit. After you submit that information, a healthcare practitioner will review it and approve or deny your request based on your medical profile. If approved, we will send the prescription directly to our pharmacy partner and they will ship the medication to you, for free! You will then be charged and receive each refill, automatically, based on the schedule you chose, for the duration of your prescription.

Who can use Gemma?

You can use Gemma if you are 15 years old or older and have a shipping address in Ontario. If you’re elsewhere in Canada, you can sign up to our Newsletter and we’ll let you know when we come to your province :)

Does Gemma accept insurance for birth control?

Yes, we accept almost all forms of private & public health insurance for medications. If you’d like to know if we accept your health insurance plan, please connect with our team at help@gemmahealth.ca.

How is birth control from Gemma shipped?

Gemma offers free shipping for contraceptives, delivered by Canada Post via priority shipping. Our packaging is discreet, and there is no mention of Gemma or a pharmacy on the outside of the envelope.

What types of birth control does Gemma offer?

We offer a wide range of generic and brand name birth control pills, including both combination and progestin only pills. We also carry the patch, as well as vaginal rings.

Finally, we also carry several brands of emergency contraception, including the original Plan B.

We do not currently offer the IUD, injection or implant as these need to be administered in person by a medical professional. However, if our medical team believes these alternatives may be best for you, we will not hesitate to let you know.

How old do I have to be to get birth control?

There is no minimum age for getting birth control in Ontario. However, if you are under 18, our medical team will need to make sure that you understand the nature and consequences of the treatment.

You also do not need your parents’ permission to get birth control. However, our medical team might encourage you to speak to your parents about your options in certain cases.

Does Gemma replace my primary care provider?

Gemma does not replace your primary care provider, but helps you avoid making multiple appointments by allowing you to access basic healthcare in a more convenient way. We encourage you to continue seeing your primary care provider, especially for annual checkups and urgent care.

I don't know what birth control to order. Can Gemma help me choose?

If you’re unsure what type of birth control may work best for you, our medical providers will be able to recommend healthy options for you. Just answer a few questions to submit a request and our Medical Team will help you find the right birth control for you.

What types of birth control are there?

Sorting through all the different birth control options out there can be tough. Before you make your choice, make sure you’re up to speed on the many forms available and how they work:

How Does Birth Control Work?

There are many types of birth control out there, but at Gemma we specialize in hormonal birth control.

Condoms, diaphragms, sponges, and other forms of physical birth control prevent sperm from reaching the egg. Hormonal birth control prevents ovulation and keeps the egg from ever getting released in the first place.

What’s the Best Form of Birth Control?

Certain bodies and lifestyles work better with some forms of birth control than others. Of the methods we offer at Gemma, all are highly effective: When used perfectly, each of our options has a success rate of up to 99%.

Although hormonal birth control options are great in nearly all cases, using them correctly can require a bit of planning. Starting birth control can bring about all sorts of bodily changes, and whatever method you choose needs to be used regularly in order to work properly.

Whatever you’re looking for in a birth control method, we can help. Here is an overview of some of the different options we offer:

Birth Control Pills

Birth control pills are the most popular method of hormonal birth control, and it’s easy to see why. The pill is small, cheap, highly effective, and has relatively few side effects.

While we offer a number of different pill brands, there are two main types of birth control pills to choose from: combination pills and minipills.

Combination pills contain both estrogen and progestin and are the most widely used type of pill. Minipills, on the other hand, contain progestin alone. Minipills are recommended for anyone who is sensitive to estrogen, like those who are breastfeeding.

The combination pill must be taken every day in order to be effective, and the minipill has to be taken every day in the same three hour window. For this reason, birth control pills are great for people who can create a routine and stick to it completely.

Some people take birth control pills for reasons other than preventing pregnancy, such as reducing unwanted bleeding. Certain brands of the pill can even be used to treat mild forms of acne.

Birth Control Shots

Birth control shots contain hormones, much like pills. They’re great choices for people who do not want to worry about forgetting a dose.

The Depo-subQ Provera X shot requires the least frequent use of any birth control method, with 12 to 13 weeks between injections. The shot can also help alleviate the symptoms of endometriosis.

Like the minipill, the shot contains no estrogen, making it a smart option for anyone who reacts poorly to doses of the hormone.

Birth Control Rings

NuvaRing is another hormone-based birth control option. It’s discreet and delivers maximum freedom for minimal maintenance.

Each ring lasts for four weeks, meaning it can be used for about a month prior to replacement. NuvaRings are small and flexible, ensuring that insertion is easy and pain-free.

NuvaRing gives you the choice of whether or not you want to have your period.
